Samantha Bennett

Samantha Bennett, A&S 20 (MA), Senior Associate Director of Development for Regional Programs

Born and raised in Maryland, Samantha Bennett has been a shining light in Development & Alumni Relations (DAR) since she started with Johns Hopkins in 2016. In her current role, she raises major gifts for university and medicine divisions, connecting with donors and alumni in a territory that spans the southeast, midwest, and mountain states. She is a leader for her team’s onboarding process and monthly prospect strategy sessions. Sam also stays involved with a number of committees around DAR, including co-chairing the Training Advisory Group and serving as a member of the Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund Allocation Committee.

How did you get into the development and alumni relations field?

I started out in sales at a solar company right after graduating from the University of Maryland because I had no idea what I wanted to do. After reflecting on a short development internship I completed in college, I realized I wanted to move into the nonprofit development world. I then spent a few years at a fundraising software company and United Way of Central Maryland before coming to Hopkins. I’m very motivated by working for a mission that serves a bigger purpose in the world, and it’s been fulfilling to be a small part of that.

What accomplishment are you most proud of (work and/or personal)?

Professionally: I earned my Master of Arts in communication and a post-baccalaureate certificate in nonprofit management from Johns Hopkins in 2020. It took three years to complete, and I had to balance school and work travel, which was challenging. Personally: I let my sisters and brother-in-law convince me to go paragliding in Switzerland (I’m afraid of heights), and it was the most fantastic experience.

What do you like most about your job?

I know this is a little cliché, but honestly: the people. I work with smart, funny, and motivated colleagues, some of whom have become very close friends throughout my six years in DAR. The donors I’m privileged to interact with are incredibly interesting, intelligent, and often very kind people who just want to have a positive impact on the world.

What do you like to do when you are not working (hobbies, activities, etc.)?

I love going on day hikes with my dog, gardening and doing yard work, reading all kinds of books, and exploring breweries and restaurants with my husband. And, in the spirit of transparency, I love some garbage reality TV.

What is something others may not know about you (a hidden talent, a unique accomplishment, etc.)?

I’m part of a blended family, and my stepsister is also named Samantha! It makes for some confusing moments.
