Lily Gretz

Lily Gretz, a Baltimore native, started as a senior administrative coordinator at Johns Hopkins in 2021, when she was introduced to the field of development and alumni relations.

“I liked the idea of working at a higher education institution, where there are endless learning opportunities,” says Lily. “I’ve enjoyed getting a behind-the-scenes look at the impact philanthropy has on Hopkins and the incredible initiatives made possible by our work.”

Currently, Lily is a senior principal gifts coordinator, managing key reports for leadership. She also manages a project focused on tracking principal-level giving trends over the past 20 years. Lily received DAR’s Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Award last year for performing above expectations.

What does your job involve that others might not realize?

Although not officially part of my job, I’m also a co-leader of the Young Professionals of DAR with Tatiana Loftus. When I first started at DAR, there weren’t many opportunities for younger professionals to socialize and network, especially for colleagues who worked in different offices or divisions. I made friends and learned from a variety of colleagues; however, I wanted the additional support of those who were in a similar career phase as me. It’s important as young professionals in DAR to learn about the work of our peers as we continue to shape our professional lives and discover new skills.

Due to COVID, I wasn’t able to network a lot in the latter half of my college years, and I felt an extra strong urge to make and help others make connections.

What do you like most about your job?
I love my team. They are a great support system, and they help reaffirm that my work is important. We have fun together, but we also work well together in times of stress. I also like that my job continuously challenges me in new ways. I’m significantly wiser than I was last year at this time as a result of stepping out of my comfort zone.

What are some of your proudest accomplishments?
I’m most proud of being awarded a research fellowship position at the Loyola Writing Center. I earned my bachelor’s degree in writing and international/global studies from Loyola University Maryland in 2021.

What do you like to do when you are not working?
I’m a big crafter — mostly knitting, crocheting, and sewing. I’m currently attempting to crochet a sweater vest with no actual pattern. I also love to read; I recently finished Little Women.
