Jessica Lynn

Jessica Lynn grew up in Baltimore and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Morgan State University. “I’m 100% Baltimorean,” she says.

A classically trained opera singer, Jessica joined Johns Hopkins as a coordinator nearly a decade ago and transitioned to Development and Alumni Relations in 2020. In her current role, she covers all donor relations duties, including stewardship, communications, and event planning.

What does your job involve that others might not realize?

One of the key aspects of my job is cross-departmental collaboration. I meet and consult with my peers to brainstorm fresh stewardship practices including acknowledgment processes, recognition ideas, and event strategy and planning. While most of us have similar job descriptions, it’s always interesting to learn how each development office approaches projects differently. Most times, some of the best ideas are discovered over an informal lunch or cup of coffee.

How did you get into the development and alumni relations field?

I started working at JHU in the fall of 2015 as a coordinator for the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research. At the time, I did not work for DAR, but most of my daily tasks involved collaboration with our development colleagues. After sitting through several staff meetings and strategic planning sessions, I found myself interested in learning more about fundraising and donor relations.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I am a foodie who loves all things food, wine, and culinary arts. While I enjoy trying new restaurants, I find the most joy in preparing my own recipes at home with the help of my son and sous chef, Devin. I also take pictures of most of my meals and cocktails, but I haven’t shared them on social media yet.

Please share something we don’t know about you.

I originally pursued a career in vocal performance. Although my job at Hopkins keeps me busy, I still perform as a soloist in concerts, recitals, and other private events — weddings, parties, and memorial services.
