What brought you to the ORIGINS program, and what do you hope to take with you when it’s over?
The ORIGINS program is a great opportunity for me to understand the importance and applicability of the philanthropic sector across all fields, including public health. To make a tangible change in health care, I first need to understand the funding and administrative systems that allow these programs to function. This summer, I’m excited to build on my current skills and learn from seasoned professionals about how to fundraise effectively in pursuit of a collective goal: improving lives in our community.
What does philanthropy mean to you, and has anyone in your life shown you what giving back looks like?
Philanthropy, to me, means finding a concrete way to channel one’s energy into creating real, positive change within communities you care about. My mom has shown me time and again the importance of giving even when it’s hard. She consistently shows up for people — offering not just material support, but her time, to those who need it most.
If you could fund one thing — at your school, in your community, or worldwide — what would it be and why?
If I could fund one thing worldwide, it would be universal healthcare. I studied abroad this past semester in Nice, France, where I observed how many people benefit from the country’s universal healthcare system. The ability to access necessary, high-quality care without the stress of falling into debt was a marvel to witness. I hope that one day everyone will be able to access the free, quality care that we all need and deserve.
