Fernanda Zuany is a junior at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), majoring in computer science. This summer, she will be supporting the School of Advanced International Studies’ development office. Maria hopes to build on her passion for advancing educational initiatives with Johns Hopkins.

What is your most memorable college experience?

“First Raise Your Pick Day” is an annual day of giving at UTEP that was founded in 2023. I had the privilege of being part of the organizing department for this amazing initiative. Being a part of it made me feel like I was making a high impact at my college.

Where do you want to be in 10 years, and how can this internship help you get there?

I aspire to develop new technologies to assist in various areas. This internship will allow me to delve into educational progress and provide me with an understanding of how innovative methods and technologies can enhance fundraising, donor and alumni relations, and other related areas.

What does philanthropy mean to you?

For me, philanthropy means being generous with your time, experience, and resources to create a better world.

What excites you most about spending your summer in Baltimore?

I am thrilled to have the chance to meet people from various cultural backgrounds. This will also be my first time away from my family for an extended period, and I believe it will be a life-changing experience. Apart from the internship, I plan to explore the city, visit museums, learn how to cook, and take advantage of the train to visit more places, such as NYC.

What is something you are passionate about?

Sports have been a passion of mine since I was a kid. I enjoy playing and watching soccer, and I’m a huge Real Madrid fan. During my second week at Maryland, I attended the USA vs. Colombia game, which was the first time I had been to a professional international soccer game. I also enjoy watching F1 races and hope to attend one this year!

My favorite Formula 1 driver is Checo Perez, and I do not like chocolate.
